In a bid to 'change the face' of Meskal Square, the biggest square  in the country, into an 'attractive ' square ,the Addis Ababa City Government Beautification, Parks and Cemetery Development and Administration Agency, is going to reconstruct Mesqel Square within the coming three years. The square will be ready before the 2015 Ethiopian general election.
For this purpose the Square will be fenced in the coming few months.

Used mainly for the purposes of national celebrations and political rallies, has been labelled Ethiopia's Tahrir Square by pro-democracy forces who have been planning to hold their large-scale peacful demonstration.
The fencing of the Square for reconstruction purposes might be another hurdle for the attempts of pro-democracy forces who want to stage the opposition rally.

The Square’s refurbishment within the coming three years, will include building statues, fountains, an internet centre, library, museum, underground tunnel and green area. Upon completion, Meskel Square will have similar features to international city squares.
It requires half a billion birr to complete the reconstruction.
