Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines co-organizes and supports an international oil called East Africa Oil & Gas Conference in London, 1-3 October 2012 together with the Ministry for Energy & Minerals, Tanzania, National Oil Corporation, Kenya, and Mozambique’s Petromoc. The Conference is expected to bring together more than 300 top executives, decision-makers and leaders in the field from countries around the region and internationally. The Conference event is being produced by CWC Group.
The above map copied from the program's official poster says "Tullow now compares prospects in the Turkana region and across the border in Ethiopia to Britain’s bonanza from the North Sea" says regarding Ethiopia's oil future. The late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi had in a recent World Economic Forum meeting in Addis Abeba that there is an "oil reserve in South Western Ethiopia".
The Website launched for the event doesn't mention Ethiopia in the list of countries that summit focuses on "Summit will act as a platform to assist in developing the hydrocarbon future of East Africa (El Dorado) by focusing primarily on upstream oil & gas opportunities and investment possibilities in Mozambique, Tanzania, South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda."
Ethiopia has not organised such a big level oil meeting suggesting the Country is joining the list of countries that recently discovered large reserves of oil such as Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique.
De Birhan has learnt that Ethiopia would be delegated by Sinknesh Ejigu, Ethiopia’s Minister of Mines and Dr.Tadese Ketsela, Head of Petroleum Licensing of Ethiopian Ministry of Mines.
It was learnt, Sinknesh will address about "the growing potential of the East African region and the vast opportunities for regional and international investors and also the opportunities in Ethiopia."
Tanzania’s Minister for Energy & Minerals, Sospeter Muhongo is expected to speak on Tanzanian gas opportunities in the rift basins of Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, Selous, Kisangire,and Mandawa.
One of the major topics to be discussed under the theme of "East Africa : Oil and Gas - Transforming a Region" is about "South Western Ethiopia: Frontier opportunities- Rift valley blocks" .
