A report released on Tuesday (13 November 2012) by GSMA, a global association of mobile service providers titled Sub-Saharan Africa Mobile Observatory 2012 has noted that Africa has showed a majory progress in number of mobile phone users. The number of mobile phone users in sub-Saharan Africa also rose by 44 per cent to 475 million, compared to just 12.3 million fixed line connections.
In Zimbabwe and Nigeria, mobile accounts for over half of all web traffic at 58.1 per cent and 57.9 per cent respectively, compared to a 10 per cent global average. The report says however that high levels of government taxation and new regulation could be hurdles to the progress.
The report puts that in terms of mobile penetration Ethiopia (17%) is just ahead of one country in Sub Saharan Africa and that is Eritrea (6%).
