Ethiopia and China have signed an agreement today to install and extend fiber highway from China to Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has been unsuccessfully trying to install fiber optics from several other countries.

Ethiopian state media said the highway will be extended to Ethiopia via Djibouti and to the rest of Central and other parts of Africa.

The report did not mention anything about the costs of extension and who will cover it.

Already 4,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cable has been installed with overtures to the East African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and by connecting Addis Ababa to existing fiber optic networks in Port Sudan and Djibouti.

Xinua reported that the project is dubbed Africa Information Super Highway, a project for cooperation between China and Africa in information and communication technology (ICT) aimed to carry out joint activities under the framework of the Africa Information Super Highway for the East African region and beyond.

Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, Ethiopian Minister of Communication and Information Technology, and Liu Lihua, Chinese Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, signed the agreement at a ceremony held in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.
