The statue of Bishop Abune Petros (Magarsa Badhasa in his birth name before he became Petros as a Bishop) has been restored today back to its original location after three years of its temporary re-shelter in the National Museum. The statue was removed from Abune Petros Avenue due to construction of the Addis Light Rail.
Abune Petros, the Ethiopian Orthodox Bishop of Wello, was born in Fiche, Oromia region of Ethiopia. He was shot a number of times while wearing his religious attire and crossing his hands by the Fascist Italians, who returned in 1935 after Italian colonialists devastating defeat in 1896, around the same square for refusing to submit to Italian rule and cursing anyone who would submit to Italians.
As can be shown in the pictures below, Abune Petros statue has been re-erected in the presence of thousands of fans of the martyr, Sunday School students of Ethiopian Ortodox Tewahedo Church and guests.
