Montevideo, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) The government of President Tabare Vazquez seeks to bring Uruguay closer to the African continent with the opening of an embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, headquarters of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
Currently, Uruguay has embassies only in Angola, Egypt and South Africa, thus a presence in the Ethiopian capital could be useful to strengthen those links and search any trade agreements.
In a recent presentation to the International Affairs Committee of the Senate, Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa recalled that there are 53 countries in Africa which are members of the United Nations.
One of the topics of interest to the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry is to ensure the support so that Uruguay becomes part of the UN Security Council in 2016.
In the immediate future, the Foreign Ministry appointed the official Romero Rodriguez as roving ambassador in Africa.
Additionally, Nin Novoa announced the intention to close down the embassy of Uruguay in Malaysia and to open one in Thailand, while the number of staff assigned to China will increase.
