Since 22 April, Ethiopia’s Somali region has seen sporadic protests directed at regional President Abdi Iley (Abdi Mohamed Omar) and his administration. Demonstrators have alleged misgovernment, corruption, and complicity with alleged abuses committed by the regional Liyu police.
Most of these protests have taken place in the southwest of Sitti (Shinile) zone, in the northwest of the Somali region, near Oromia region’s Harerge zones, but diaspora-based opposition media has reported demonstrations in the region’s capital of Jijiga, and in the neighbouring chartered city of Dire Dawa. On 24 April, following two days of meetings by state officials, a reshuffled Somali regional government cabinet was announced.
