The government in Ethiopia has lifted the nine month old State of Emergency, which was declared in October 2016 after large anti-government protests in Oromia and Amhara regions that had claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians.
The Command Post, composed of around 12 military, and security has been governing the country since then. Today’s announcement did not mention if the Post was disbanded or will continue.
Since the Command Post took control of the administration, tens of thousands of youths from Oromia and Amhara regions have been jailed in inhuman conditions.
Three New Ministerial Roles
The parliament has also approved the appointment and reshuffles of ministers. Kebede Chane of the Ethiopian Customs and Revenue Commission has been made Minister for Federal and Pastoralist Affairs replacing Kassa Teklebirhan, who was appointed as an Ambassador last week. Dr. Tilahun Gete has become the Minister for Education.
Moges Balcha is now with a ministerial portfolio, the Director of Ethiopian Customs and Revenue Commission.
Immunity Lifted
The one party dominated Ethiopian parliament also voted to lift the immunity of Alemayehu Gujo, the State Minister at Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development – Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. It is possible that he would soon be charged with corruption.
