Hana holds BA Degree but lives working as a street vendor
Sheger FM Radio in Addis Abeba has today reported about an Ethiopian lady in her twenties, Hana Awash, who earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History & Heritage Management from Arba Minch University, Ethiopia in 2011 now lives of selling toasted cereals and boiled potato in the streets of Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.
Hana explains to the journalist about her theoretical knowledge of types of history and the state of heritage management in Ethiopia. She says our heritage management today is in shambles.
According to Sheger FM, Hana suffers from a disease that affected the right side of her face and eye. Doctors had told her that the small lump on her face is due to cancerous types.
Hana said “although I applied for work in various organisations, the only response I got was lip sucking.” She has found it difficult to find work in her area of study.
Despite her disability may have complicated her success in finding work, Hana’s fate is mainly the result of the current Ethiopian regime’s education policy which is mainly geared towards quantitatively increasing the number of university graduates rather than quality and employment.
In the last Ethiopian fiscal year, Ethiopian universities gradated 100,000 students with first degree.
Hana told the Radio that she would be pleased to work and that she is competent enough to work in her profession if she was given the opportunity.
