Thousands of Ethiopians in the capital Addis Abeba are at moment protesting following the slaughter of 29 their fellow Christian Ethiopians in Libya on Sunday. Although there was a grand protest called on Thursday by self organised groups, the residents of Cherkos area, Addis Abeba, from where two of the martyrs come from, started the protest. The protesters held banners and photographs of the victims which read “Sovereignty means getting the rights of citizens living everywhere respected”, “there is no government” “we need solution” “we are united”, “the blood of our brothers is not water” and many others. Most of the slogans were targeted against the government and the ISIL that killing the Christians. The government’s statement on Sunday had angered many, it had said “the government has not confirmed if the victims were Ethiopians”. There is an expression of anger, frustration and deep sorrow among the protesters. They mourn the victims and demanded justice for the victims and many more stranded in Yemen, South Africa and Libya.
Citizens posting on social media outlets from Addis Abeba have said the protesters have been heading to the Palace but were redirected by police. They are now heading towards Meskel Square, in the Capital.
