Since Ethiopia became a federal state and the country was divided into regions, each regional state started adopting and producing its own regional codified Constitution in addition to the common Federal Constitution.
One can easily find the codified constitutions of the eight of the nine Ethiopian regional states on the Ethiopian House of Federations HERE. The eight being Amhara, Oromia, Gambela, Afar, Southern, Benishangul, Harar, and Somali regions. But Where is Tigray’s??
Nominally, the “Tigrean Constitution” is also available on this same website. BUT the devil is in the details. The Tigary Constitution written in Tigregna language is a COPY of the 1994 Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Constitution. That means they translated the Federal Constitution and posted it as the Region’s, which it is not. Of all the regional constitutions available on the site and else, it is only Tigray Region that does not have its own constitution. Actually one can find a Proclamation Amending the Tigray Region Constitution HERE but the problem is that it is only a Proclamation that amends the invisible “Constitution”.
Where is Tigary’s codified Constitution???
A search by this writer and others to find the Tigray Regional State’s Constitution was unsuccessful. For instance the Constitution of the Afar Regional State contains 111 articles and stipulates how the State is governed as are the eight other. Similarly, the 1995 . Constitution of Amhara Regional State, revised, contains 120 articles available HERE.
If Tigray Regional State has its own Constitution like other regional states, why is it not made available?
FINALLY, hours after posting this article and tweeting it on Twitter, someone has just tweeted back this writer with a link to the Constitution of Tigray. Now we are at a stage of analysis and we will be back with more views and reviews on it.
