State TV focusing on religious leaders ordering protests to stop, Gov’t vows merciless crackdown on Oromo protests

23-2-2016

Today’s prime time news on the state owned EBC shows bow tense and restless the government is finding itself due to the ongoing Oromo Protests, now in its fourth month claiming the lives of hundreds of people shot by government forces.

The reports tonight were dominated by government organised leaders of the four Abrahamic religions and traditional Aba Geda leaders. The religious leaders were calling for calm and others were warning the protesters.

Similarly, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has once vowed to take “an un-repeatable measure” against whom he called “anti-peace” forces.

“anti peace forces supported by foreign forces destroyed public and government institutions in some parts of Oromia regional state.” he said.

The government had announced that it had suspended the Addis Abeba City Master plan, which was the main cause of the protests, but the protests have not been abated and the calls for human rights, freedom, equality and democracy continued.

The Oromo Protest is one of the biggest political challenges it had faced since the 2005/06 post election violence in 24 years.
