Between October 2 and 8, 2016, there were 60 conflicts in Ethiopia and 55 were in the Oromia region, 2 in Southern region, 2 in Addis Abeba and one in Dire Dawa administrations of Ethiopia, as to the monitoring reports by the disaggregated conflict analysis and crisis mapping project, ACLED (Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project).
The dataset codes the dates and locations of all reported political violence and protest events in over 60 developing countries in Africa and Asia. Political violence and protest includes events that occur within civil wars and periods of instability, public protest and regime breakdown. The project covers all African countries from 1997 to the present, and South and South-East Asia in real-time.
In our next peace we will assess the trend over the past 11 months.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, leading to a deadly stampede which left at least 55 people dead and dozens more injured. Opposition figures put the death toll to at least 678, and declared “five days of rage” following the events. Immediately after the incident, protesters reportedly began blocking roads on the way to Hawassa and Ambo, and clashed with the police.
